In Royer’s early days, we asked world-class session harpist Gayle Levant if she would record a song for us for demonstration purposes. She sent a beautiful harp to a local studio, met us there with her husband John Richards, sound checked, and then recorded this beautiful piece of music in one take. Gayle’s talents are matched only by her wonderful personality and generosity.

SF-12 stereo ribbon microphone on cello and clarinet. The high, eerie, sweet melody is an overdubbed cello section playing harmonics, recorded with a single SF-12. The clarinet melody was also recorded on one SF-12. From the 20th Century Fox movie “The Thin Red Line.”

One SF-12 stereo ribbon microphone on live saxophone and piano. The SF-12 was positioned twelve feet in front of the musicians, piano slightly to left, saxophone slightly to right. This recording came from a warm-up jam. Recording is dead dry, exactly as it went to DAT.

Recording chain: One SF-12 stereo ribbon mic positioned for X-Y recording, to a Millennia Media HV-3 preamp. Recorded to an Alesis M20 at 20-bit, 44.1kHz. Imported into Pro Tools 24, then dithered to 16-bit with Waves Ultramaximizer L1+. No EQ, compression or reverb.
